The best cosplay I ever did was the Invisible Man, and I spent less than $5 on it. I scraped up most of the pieces from around my house. An ace bandage, semi-nice pants, trench coat I got for free, and some giant sunglasses I found at a thrift store replaced the shaded goggles I used before. And a brimmed hat I found lying around. I've never been to a con but our local theatre has this thing during the summer where they show old horror films for free one night a week on the big screen, and my friends made me go dressed as the Invisible Man once and I was a big hit so I went that way ever since. I've even had people take pictures with me. Quite a lot of fun.On one such night we stopped to get gas on the way home, and I'm sitting in full costume in the passenger's seat, and there was a police officer there. He was just chatting with the guy at the counter, and they both looked out the window and spotted me. I guess word gets around because they recognized the costume and laughed. Which I was grateful for, it would have been terribly embarrassing to get arrested for looking sketchy. Especially since the real Invisible Man was a psychopath. But yeah, costumes are fun. I want to make an Assassin's Creed one sometime.
If you like that kind of attention and recognition then you should totally try a convention. A lot of the cosplay shenanigans that happen work a lot like that, except far more people will understand who/what you're supposed to be.
