Was she talking to herself just now? Tom blinked and readjusted his position on the seat. Being outside was starting to make him uncomfortable, since he wasn't used to it. He didn't want the other kids to see him as some geeky freak who didn't know how to be normal. But he had a little confidence while he tries to talk to the girl, and just hoped that he was doing things right. After a couple of seconds, he figured he should smile back at her, so that's what he did. She seemed nice, which was good. It gave him a warm feeling that added to his confidence, though he was still awkwardly shifting around his space. "Yeah, I'm a uh...freshman." Tom slid back to his thoughts, wondering what to do next. People shake hands, right? He glanced away for a second and brushed his hand over the hair behind his head before turning back to the girl, skipping his idea to shake hands. Instead he started talking again. "So what's your name?"
