It'll work, after all FFX and its sequel had this weird magical technology land that had modern cultural elements like pop concerts and underwater soccer and firearms. And SaGA Frontier which also did the same melding and had also odd party members. 

Then you got Phantasy Star where the twist is you're living on a massive spaceship as part of an exodus and everyone forgot and reverted into a quasi-medieval world.
