Though the story he seems to stick to most often is his life as an engineer at a chemical plant that he quit to pursue his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian - however it was very short lived. Failing miserably, and desperate to support his pregnant wife, Jeannie, he agreed to help a pair of criminals break into the old plant where he used to work, being promised a great amount of cash. While he was planning the heist, police contacted him, letting him know that his wife and unborn child had fallen victim to a household accident, and had died. Stricken with grief, he quickly tried to back out of the plan of breaking the criminals into the chemical plant, but the thugs ended up strong-arming him into keeping his end of the bargain. As soon as they entered the plan, however, they were immediately caught by security and guns were fired. The two thugs were immediately killed, and while trying to escape for his own life, he came into contact with the Batman himself. Terrified, he jumped over the rail and plummeted himself into a vat of chemicals, forever changing his appearance to the sickly white skin, blood red lips and bright green hair everyone knows the Joker by. There have been many other variations to this story over the years, slight changes that lead many to believe that his story isn't true at all. One such change involves a persona where he called himself the Red Hood and wore a red dome over his head to conceal his identity to keep from being spotted by any workers that might recognize him at his old job. Though if any variation of this story were true, it is still unclear whether or not the chemical change that disfigured his body was also the cause of his disfigured brain, or did the previous "Jack Napier" have a psychopathic, murderous streak in him the whole time? What is known, about the Joker, is who he is now. From the Joker's first appearance in Gotham, he has been willing to wreak as much havoc as possible upon innocent people in order to claim the mantle of Gotham City's greatest criminal mastermind. Throughout his decades-long war with Batman, he has committed crimes both whimsical and inhumanly brutal, all with a personal sense of logic. Landing himself in Arkham Asylum on more than one occasion, the Joker was eventually assigned a new psychiatrist by the name of Harleen Quinzel. Immediately, simply by her name-sake and how easily it could be twisted into Harlequin, the Joker's mind set to work. He grew close to her, learned her secrets and spewed off stories of his own that may or may not be true, but it got her to sympathize with him. At first she was resilient, but as time went on, he could see the effect he was having on her. Unfortunately, so did the rest of the Arkham Asylum employees. They pulled Harleen from him, assigning him someone else, but the Joker didn't stick around long enough to get to know the new guy. He broke out of Arkham, ready to wreck havoc on the city but was soon returned to Arkham Asylum, beaten, bloody and broken by Batman. Outraged, seeing just what sort of man the Batman really was, Harleen snapped. Going out on the town, she broke into a costume shop, grabbing the first outfit she could find (ironically a jester outfit) and helped herself to as many prank gadgets as she could. Then, returning to Arkham Asylum, Harleen, now calling herself Harley Quinn, used her knowledge of the building, her athleticism, and smarts, to get the Joker out and returned him to Amusement Mile where they could start a life of crime together. This venom comes in many forms; from gas to darts to liquid poison, and has been his primary calling card from his first appearance until the present. By coincidence or careful chemistry, Joker himself is immune to it. The Joker is also not above using guns and other "mainstream" weapons, and almost always has a dagger and pistol on his person. His fighting whenever confronted by other villains or the bat himself can lead others to believe that he has had some military training in his "mysterious" youth, though he has never confirmed nor denied this. Joker is also very skilled in the fields of chemistry, genetics, and nuclear engineering. And though no hacker, Joker can rig up and use a computer on a more advanced level than your average Joe, though he usually uses monitors to stream video of himself rather than use them for much else (save for bomb countdowns, security and so on). Though not exactly a skill, as it can't be explained, Joker has cheated death numerous times, even in seemingly inescapable and lethal situations. Though he has been seen caught in explosions, been shot repeatedly, dropped from heights, electrocuted, etc., the Joker always manages to return fully alive and (sometimes) unscathed to wreak havoc again. Other Having worked in a chemical factory, the Joker is very scientific and experimental, which is where most of the drugs that his fellow crime partners use, such as Scarecrow’s Fear Toxin and an equivalent to Bane’s Venom. These drugs he tries to sell on the black market to make some extra cash and give the crime syndicate a push in the right direction - or wrong direction. Or is the wrong direction the right direction?
