During one such show, Bruce Wayne happened to be in the audience, having taken a Chase Meridian out on a date, however the date was over almost before it started as Two Face took up the mantle of the ring leader. He had installed a bomb within the tent, and the Grayson family did all that they could to stop it while Batman dealt with Two Face. The bomb was diffused, but not before the trapeze Richard's family was using to get the bomb out of the tent broke. From the top of the tent, Richard watched as his family fell to their deaths. Feeling responsible for Richard's family, Bruce offered to take in Richard as his ward, however the boy's curiosity landed him smack dab in the middle of the batcave. Not exactly having a choice in the matter, Bruce suddenly had a sidekick - Robin. Richard and Bruce became near-inseparable, both in and out of costume. However as Richard grew older, his need for independence grew stronger, causing quite a few fights between him and Bruce. It didn't help that for a while, Richard had been deemed the leader of the Teen Titans, which made his want for independence stronger. Eventually, Richard had, had enough, and left Gotham to become his own hero, dropping the costume and the name Robin and called himself Nightwing. He became the protector of Blüdhaven, Gotham's economically troubled neighboring city. There was a brief time when Richard was pulled back into Gotham after Batman had gone missing and Bruce Wayne was believed dead. Fulfilling his duty as a hero, Richard adorned the Batman cowl for a short while until Bruce came back, and then returned to Blüdhaven to continue his work. He still pops into Gotham every once in a while when he doesn't feel as though Bruce can protect the city on his own, and occasionally even tag-teams with the caped crusader. He is a world-class detective, second only to the likes of Batman. Having been trained by The Dark Knight himself, he was rigorously trained in everything from escapology to criminology, fencing, stealth, disguise, and numerous other combat/non-combat disciplines. His earlier years as a prodigious natural athlete gave him peak human levels of agility and acrobatic skills, often-times being referred to as the greatest acrobat who has ever lived, even when compared to Batman. To this day, Richard is still the only person on Earth (on record) who can do a quadruple somersault. Also thanks to Batman's training, Richard has the ability to instill fear into others. While not as efficient as Batman in this category, he still uses this ability effectively and can be quite an intimidating force. As Nightwing, Richard is a master of dozens of martial arts disciplines, with an emphasis on Aikido and Escrima, taught to him by Batman. His preferred fighting style combines Escrima, Judo, Savate, Capoeira, Aikido, Boxing, Wing Chun, Hapkido, Jeet Kune Do, Taijiquan, Ninjutsu, and Bojitsu with his acrobatic abilities. He is considered on of the finest human combatants in unarmed combat, almost on par with Batman. He has fought and held his own or defeated some of the best fighters in the world, most notably Ra's Al Ghul, Deathstroke, Jason Todd, Shrike, Red Arrow/Arsenal, Azrael and even Batman himself. When armed, Richard has also been trained as an expert on almost all types of weaponry, but is not by any means the best. Though when it comes to marksmanship, Richard almost never misses his targets (9/10). His training has made him a master at stealth, capable of easily breaching high security facilities without being detected. He has been compared to Batman many times in terms of stealth and has been stated to be on equal ground as the Dark Knight in this field, having even been able to sneak up on him successfully a few times. He has also been trained in hunting and tracking by Batman, also considered to be on Batman's level field. Also as good as Batman is his ability to disguise himself without detection. Beginning immediately after Batman agreed to have Richard as a sidekick, on of the first things Batman taught Richard was how to escape, in turn making him a master escape artist. Though not as good as Batman, he is proficient enough, to be only second to Batman himself in this category. It goes without saying that Richard is also in peak physical condition. He conditions his body regularly, giving him above average (Olympian) endurance, strength, reflexes, speed, agility and durability. Just like Bruce, Richard is also multilingual in the languages of English, French, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, German, Swahili, Mandarin, Contonese and somewhat decent in various other languages such as Romany and the alien language of Tamaran. His time as a leader for the Teen Titans has also honed Richard into becoming an exceptionally skilled leader that only advanced through his involvement with the Outsiders and even the Justice League. Additionally, Richard's efforts to remain in contact with other heroes makes him a master at rallying, unifying, and inspiring the superhero community, a skill in which he has surpassed his mentor completely. Also unlike Bruce, Richard has looser tactical methods that relies more on intuition and timing, rather than meticulous preparation. Other Because of Two Face's involvement with the death of his family, Richard holds an almost unhealthy grudge against the man and will nearly stop at nothing to see (what he calls justice) revenge served. There have been a few times that Richard could have killed Two Face, but Batman was able to talk him out of it. At night, when it's quiet, Richard isn't sure whether or not he should thank Batman for interfering, or regrets not ending the man himself all those years ago.
