Well they don't have to be extremely unique they just need to be capable of somthing that sets them apart, like a vampire who can walk in daylight or a siren whose voice is considerably more powerful than the rest of its kind. If you want you can PM me the species and their special ability and I'll help. 
Yes though, there can be character death but the villain of the story doesn't really want them dead he'd rather break their will and make them one if his living collections.
