I was thinking of a historian, intimately familiar with modern warfare. Not practically, just from an academic stand point. 

Though now you've said that, perhaps a mechanic would be more suitable, or a former Coastguard (I imagine survival training would feature in that line of work). I'll give it a mulling over.
