It's one of the things Mahz has talked about implementing. It'll be done, it's just a question of when that will happen.

Also, he's said that he plans for the displayed number of PMs to eventually become a counter for how many new ones you have, rather than the total number, so that should also help those people who are irritated by the large number sitting there.
