His eyes opening wide, Samuel awoke, already fully alert. The quiet murmur of people waking in the cabin had been enough to rouse him from his light sleep. Looking around, Samuel was relieved to see that the bunk beside him remained empty. He lay there, unmoving for a moment longer, simply listening to the sounds around him. It didn’t take long for him to hear the staff member calling out for them to gather for training. Swinging down from his bunk, Samuel gathered his gear and began dressing in uniform. Staring for a long moment at the strange array of straps, he was unfamiliar with how to put them on. Samuel puzzled over it for a moment, before looking up to see how the others were doing it. A few of the trainees looked like they were in the same boat as him, but he noticed a couple of the boys who seemed to know what they were doing. Watching closely, Samuel copied their movements, moving the straps into position. When he was finished, he exited the cabin and made his way towards the training grounds.
