It's because CraftBukkit (the server mod that you guys play on) is simply incapable of releasing the new version until sometime after the Minecraft client update goes public. In all honestly, you guys are looking at a week to two weeks before CraftBukkit gets the right version for you to play 1.8 on it. A beta version of CraftBukkit may be released earlier, but it will most certainly contain bugs.

Declaring the restart to happen on the day the update arrives was, quite literally, the dumbest declaration I've seen in a long while.

To be perfectly honest, do we NEED bukkit to play mine craft? We wait 3-4 weeks before we get our protection plugins. Big whoop. Yes, I am aware of the rogue griefer, but so far the things they have done have been nothing more than the equivalent of somebody stealing a paperback book.

You know what else is dumb? You ever thinking it was 'declared', and that no one took into account the bukkit issue--which has been discussed already.

This, however, is a valid thing to issue to bring up.

Lockette and faction claims do give pretty good security/peace of mind, but there's nothing saying that's absolutely necessary. I would slightly prefer it but after I've heard what other people think I'll make up my mind.

The only thing that has stopped griefers from doing more than stealing a paperback book has been Lockette. They've only been able to pop stuff out of item frames to steal because chests have been locked, thus keeping the losses as seeming minimal. If we were to conduct the server move without that plugin in place, that would mean our chests of stuff would all be sitting there completely unprotected and vulnerable to any asshole who wants to steal things. As we have seen from past griefing bullshit there are indeed thieves lurking about on the server, though the most they've been able to get away with is horse armor and clocks due to the aforementioned protection, so it's a real concern.

So I would say that we do indeed need Bukkit, and I don't think it's a good idea to update and start up the server without it and the Lockette plugin in place.

Yeah, I see no problem with doing this. :p It'll give everybody a chance to get used to how 1.8 works and marvel in the FPS gains for those with multi-core processors.

And yeah, just playing a temp little server wouldn't be half bad. I'm afraid my FPS hasn't improved much, but then again my computer is a little feeble.

In 1.8, you won't notice much of a difference if your processor isn't dual core. Which, to be fair, most newer computers and laptops have nowadays. Even netbooks.
