They can do whatever they want with their dreams. Aaron has simply chosen to run his dreams like a giant sims game with himself as king. I've even had a dreamer that didn't even use their dreams for dreaming if you can wrap your head around that. I strongly recommend against going that route though, as it is incredibly difficult to make work in the story. Your dreamer doesn't even have to pick one way of dreaming and stick with it all the time. Aaron for example sometimes abandons his little created world for periods to do other things.
