As far as the animals go there are some who definitely do have that capacity - the ones who have self-recognition (some corvids, bonobos, orangutans I think, dolphins and some other cetaceans, and some others) but for the sake of the game it's just easier to say that can't. Besides, they'll get some sort of name during the game and as they gain more self-awareness.
