Yeah.. well apart from that.. not to sound like a know it all.. but warhammers are a late-medieval weapon. :P So it doesn't fit the scenario either.
The standard weapons were really a (short)sword, spear, axe or a two handed axe (which was used as a polearm more or less, not a berserker type axe) and the militia weapon was, from those, almost always the spear to support soldiers from behind.
