[i]A short adress by the Ottoman Sultan and Caliph of Islam, Abdul Medjid II, on March 22nd, 1928[/i]

Honourable deputies, representatives of all peoples of the Empire. May the Peace and Blessings of the Almighty Lord be upon you.

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The elections of last month once again saw most of the good men and women of the country, from Constantinople to Sanaa, cast their ballots for their representatives in the calmest elections our country has seen. This is in perfect harmony with the peaceful days that our empire is experiencing after its many wars. Rebellions and tribal wars are more and more looking to be a thing of the past as people are lowering their weapons and raising the hammer and scythe and enrich our nation. This peace and stability, as it is seen in the entirety of Europe, is one that all people must not only cherish and nurture, but build upon.

With a stable country, and with the global economy demanding more and more petroleum, our country has grown into a position where the Public Debt is no longer a major issue for us, and we can focus on spending money on our own country rather than on the Great Powers of Europe. Ladies and Gentlemen, I request of you that you shall all take the interests of all the peoples to heart when you propose laws, suggest measures, produce budgets, and do other duties you have. Throughout our country railroads lay uncompleted. Industry is still in its infancy in Anatolia and non-existent in the Arab provinces, where subsistence farmers and shepherd are still most of the economy. Harvests remain meagre, roads poor. Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Hejaz and Yemen are disconnected from Anatolia and the rest of the world.

I do not want to see Anatolia and Rumelia develop into European countries whilst the Arab provinces remain destitute. The friendship between the Turkish and Arabian peoples is at the very core of the well-being of our both our peoples and all the others in the Ottoman State. It am convinced that no good will come from the breaking-apart of our beloved country, and that I will find the vast majority of my Arab subjects on my side on this matter. We have overcome far worse catastrophes together, and I pray that the centuries-old ties between different peoples and religions shall strengthen like before, when they were stronger than nationalism. And for that, we can not have the Turk ruling the Arab, but the Turk ruling together with the Arab, the Greek, the Armenian, and the Jew. 

Our Empire is moving into a new, better era. And for that, I am happy. United in our will to make a better country, we shall move forward and make our country ever victorious. I plea to all good people in this land to hold high the unity and prosperity of it, and labour towards the great future that awaits our beautiful country. "Unity is Strength" is the how the common maxim goes, and it is an honest to God truth. Throughout the past, many things have changed both inside the empire and around it, but it remained. The years after the great war have been years of great change and the coming years will be years of great change too, but even if a national rebirth is to take place, our empire shall remain.

Ladies and gentlemen, representatives of the people. With the powers invested in me by God Almighty, the Constitution, and the will of the people, I declare this parliament opened. As the leader of the largest party, I appoint Mustafa Kemal Pasha as prime minister, to form a government. May God protect you all.
