If you played through especially AC3's modern sets, the platforming was actually pretty tight, and a lot of things felt as if they could work in the future; but AC4 steered away heavily (all the modern parts were in first-person walk mode, with a permanent iPad in your hand). 

In other words I think modern AssCreed [i]could[/i] work, if they set their minds to it and left out the goddamn apple.
