House Dayne of Starfall Night Falls to Dawn
House Dayne of Starfall is a Dornish noble house sworn to House Martell. The Sword of the Morning is a title given to a Dayne knight who is considered worthy of wielding the greatsword Dawn, a blade said to be created from the heart of falling star. A cadet branch of House Dayne are the Daynes of High Hermitage. In appearance, members of the family are stony Dornishmen whose characteristics mostly resemble the rest of the Seven Kingdoms in look, customs and traditions. Unlike the rest of the more Rhoynish-looking Dornishmen they have pale skin with hair ranging from dark brown to pale blond and that they often have violet eyes. Their land in the Red Mountains of Dorne is not a wealthy land, but offers the Dornishmen inhabiting it access to the bountiful lands of the Reach, particularly the lands of the Oakhearts. The men of House Dayne have lead many a raiding party into those lands, though the current generation has not raided on the scale of it's predecessors, turning especially more insular in the years leading up to and following the Dornish Civil War. The late Lord Edric broke tradition with those before him and was rarely found in Starfall once he had come of age and even after inheriting his title and lands from his father. Instead he spent his time in Sunspear, a wild youth that never truly matured into leadership. His younger brother, Gerold, ruled the Red Mountains in his stead, a fact Edric was content with while he fostered a friendship with the Martells and eventually came to serve as an adviser to the Prince. He also found and married his wife in Sunspear, a cousin of the ruling Prince, Sarella. Edric was a handsome enough man, his pale blonde hair and deep indigo eyes a rarity in Dorne. He and Sarella shared a marriage with little strife but somehow less love. Sarella gave him only three children, although Edric fathered several bastards, four of whom he had brought up by his family remaining in Starfall. Gerris took after his father, in physical appearance and personality, though he was the only one to do so of Sarella's children. Lewyn and Tyene were very much their mother's children. Lewyn was a swarthy fellow, albeit with hair a few shades too light to give him a true Salty look. He also proved to be a hot blooded man, always eager for a fight; it landed him in hot water more than once. Tyene, small and wild, was Sarella's favored child, a fact not well hidden from the other two. Edric had hoped to marry Tyene to the Prince's son Trystan, but his plans were soured by Tyene's impetuous nature. At fifteen, while enjoying a tour of Lys with Sarella, she met and married a pretty-faced Lyseni merchant prince. Sarella returned without their daughter, one of the few times in her long marriage that she and Edric had an explosive argument. Sarella died just a few years later from a wasting sickness at a still relatively young age of 46. Edric, however little time he spent grieving the loss of the woman, did not marry again. The Lord did take several woman to be his paramours in the later years of his life, with one final child being born before he passed away in 132. Lord Edric left behind eight children, three trueborn and five bastards. Gerris had been molded into a decent enough man although a bit too soft hearted for rule. Lewyn would eventually come to be the master of arms in Starfall and die during the Dornish Civil war. Tyene rarely crossed the Narrow Sea, her last visit being when she was still a young woman. The various bastards Edric sired fared well. The eldest, Quellon, tutored well by the Maester, lead Starfall when Gerris was in Sunspear. He lives still, though his health is failing. Gavyn would lead the infrequent raids into the Reach's lands although he ultimately found himself taken with a minor knightly house's daughter from the Reach. He did not return to the Red Mountains until his wife had died in childbirth, and he brought with him his three children. He was slain in the Dornish Civil War. Perros, the youngest of the bastard children, now bears the title Sword of the Morning though he has become an anger-filled man and prone to rage. Myranda and Adiana have long since been wed to other houses in Dorne.
Name Gerris Dayne, Lord of Starfall Appearance Age 54 Personality Kind, genial, soft-hearted. The qualities of a good friend, but a lax leader. In many ways Gerris is much like his father, Edric. Neither would have made been good Lords had they stayed in Starfall and allowed their bannerman to proceed unrestrained. As it was, both men had better brothers to do the dull tasks of Lordship while they spent their time drinking, whoring, and forming friendships with the royal family. In then end, both men were rather beloved by a people that barely knew them if only because they were never around long enough to cause any harm. To his family, at least in some ways, Gerris is a better man than his father raised him to be. Having seen the loveless marriage between his father and mother, as well as the favoritism paid, Gerris did not seek to make those same mistakes. Though he loved two women, when he married one and took the other as his paramour, he did not wander more. He raised all their children together, making no distinction between those of his wife and those of her sister, his lover. He also saw fit to see that his children took to their lessons, at times against their own wishes. In the end, he was loved but also respected, at least by his family. In recent years, following the dissolution of his friendship with the late Prince Trystan and the Martell family, Lord Gerris has become more withdrawn and insular. He sees his beloved Mariya and his children, but all others are directed to either Nysterica or his half-brother, Quellon. History Gerris was born and raised in Sunspear, his days of youth spent roaming the capital and the surrounding lands. He began his life as a shy young boy, though his time with peers broke him of that quickly. He quickly joined the group that surrounded the young Prince Trystan, a shifting group of alliances and friendships. of barely veiled animosities. Fighting amongst the group was not uncommon and Gerris dueled to first blood at only 13 with another from the pack. When he wasn't getting into the rare scuffle, he was out drinking and hunting-be it game or women. Even as the quietest of the lot, Gerris had no problems finding women or enjoyment in the wildness of youth. Studies be damned, his father had not ruled directly and neither would he. Becoming friend to those above and beneath him was his goal. Though his friendships did not carry the same weight as Lord Edric's had. For to an extent, they were friendships unmarred by politics. Gerris would listen and be listened to, but at the end of the day he was much too soft to be taken seriously in the realm of politics, in the realm in which he was meant to be a part. His marriage changed some things. On a rare trip home to the Red Mountains, during a feast and small tourney, Gerris met the lovely and much younger, Fowler sisters. Jeyne the eldest, Mariya a few years younger. Beautiful women, Gerris courted them both, though in his thirties, he had not yet grown out of his gallivanting ways. The sisters though, were not so much like the women he had wooed in Sunspear. They teased and taunted him without mercy for the month they were guests at Starfall. On they day they were due to leave, Gerris asked to wed Jeyne, and perhaps more surprisingly, that Mariya would join them as his paramour. It turned some heads, even for the more laid back Dornish sensibilities. It did however cool his blood. Unlike his father, he raised all his children together, whether born of Jeyne or Mariya. And a true love did form for both women, though he could not always hide the preference that formed for Jeyne, particularly after her untimely death. She gave him three children and only six years of marriage before dying while pregnant with her fourth child. Gerris refused to ever find out what gender the child was to be, for it was far enough along for the Maester to discern. For several years following her death, Gerris was withdrawn from Mariya, though he loved her still. It is only recently he has begun considering marriage to her. For much of his rule Gerris left Starfall to his half-brother Quellon. The bond between the brothers was not strong, something Gerris wanted to remedy in his own brood of children. Since returning to Starfall for good, his relationship with the ailing man has improved somewhat, but he sadly recognized nothing could completely mend the rift between them. Perros, his only other remaining sibling, and he share a worse rift, for Perros has become tainted by his anger. Though Gerris bestowed Perros with the title, Sword of the Morning, he has begun to worry that it was a mistake to do so. The Dornish Civil war broke many things, but worst for Gerris was the loss of friendship between he and Prince Trystan. Gerris had never trusted the Yronwood woman, or the Yronwoods in general. A conniving and scheming lot. The Lord of Starfall had also never voiced his worries, until it was too late. When open rebellion broke out, he seriously considered staying out of it completely. His advisers convinced him otherwise. But it's another decision he regrets for both Lewyn and Gavyn died in that war. Perros changed in that war. Trystan's health plummeted with the ramifications of that war. Gerris holds many regrets from that time and as each nameday passes, he cannot help but find himself more buried beneath the rabble of so much loss. He can only hope that his children, most notably Nysterica, succeed where he failed. Name Nysterica Dayne, Heir to Starfall Appearance Age 21 Personality Aloof and cold for a Dornish woman. Nysterica is not plagued with indecision, and she has the political mind to go about achieving it. In many ways she is an antithesis to her father. She prefers to be blunt and tends to jump straight to her point when she finds she has the high ground. The heir to Starfall greatly dislikes being told what is expected of her, or what she must do. Petulant in her youth, she is arrogant in adulthood, haughty. History Much of her youth was spent in Sunspear, like her father. She spent much of her time in the company of Prince Richard and his siblings, for her father wished her to form the same friendships as he had in his youth. Her studies though were given much more importance, and unlike her father, Nysterica excelled at them, often preferring the studies to the idle gossip and chatter of court. Her mother's beauty was evident from a young age, a fact Nysterica used to her advantage. The slim girl with pale skin and vibrant violet eyes was both sought after and talked about for how often she spurned those trying to favor her. Her time in the capital was cut short by the disagreements between her father and Prince Trystan. She became a true lady of Starfall under the tutelage of her uncle and the maester, the Lords of the Red Mountains quickly became accustomed to dealing with her rather than Gerris or Quentyn. Many proposals were discussed, particularly in regards to her marriage. That was a sore spot for the heir and one she quickly remedied. While visiting with the Dayne cadet branch in High Hermitage, Nysterica wed a distant cousin, a noble only in name, with no hopes of inheriting the smallest tract of land. While her inheritance would have been safe regardless, thanks to the sensible laws of Dorne, Nysterica wanted no man she wed to have any sort of claim over her. Her husband, one born so low, would have little choice but to do as she said. And no longer could the men around her discuss the politics of her marriage. Name Arron Dayne, The Dark Star Appearance Age 19 Personality Arron is an angry young man, impatient to make a name for himself. He takes after his uncle Perros, a fact not well liked by his father. Born to be a warrior, he does not have the political mind of his sister, or the temperance of his father. He often acts before he thinks, and is loathe to admit his mistakes. While he is ambitious, his striving is ill-tempered. He acts without tact regardless of who it is he is interacting with. History He spent his youth in Sunspear, much like the previous generations of his family. He proved to be poor at sparring with the spear, the Dornishman's preferred weapon, but excelled at the sword once the Daynes returned to Starfall. While he was meant to be fostered by House Manwoody, Arron was instead given as a squire to his uncle Perros. The war was the defining period of Arron's young life, tainted by the bloodshed he saw, and the deaths of two of his uncles in which he could do nothing to help them. That helplessness turned to anger and hate for those he had fought. Perhaps under the right circumstances that hatred could have been washed away, but he only grew closer to Perros following the war. And Perros did little but encourage the hatred to grow firmly in the young man's heart. Arron has spent little time in Starfall following the civil war. He traveled with Perros, a respected but feared knight. Perros did not have much of a better political mind, but he was a cunning man with high aspirations that he made sure to instill in Arron's impressionable mind. It was Perros who made sure his nephew went to King's Landing, and Perros who made sure Gerris remained unaware of this fact. As to what the two men seek, for now, only they know.
