I really did not intend for the three enemy kingdoms to be cartoonishly evil (or for Erasmus to be cartoonishly good for that matter, although everyone seems to be on the same page there), and using peasant fodder is not something you usually want to do, unless I'm completely mistaken. A drafted peasant is a terrible fighter with terrible morale and terrible equipment - otherwise, why are you emptying your coffers to by weapons and armour for terrible fighters with terrible morale? - and extremely expensive. Since your peasant will most likely die, the cost of sending him to war is all the taxes he would otherwise have paid to you for the rest of his life, which is going to be a lot more than a single professional soldier's pay for a couple of seasons. If you kill enough peasants, you're also looking at a potential famine.
