In terms of the time period, it's less Tolkien/Middle-Earth/Medieval and more Colonial Period with some scattered Sci-Fi and heavy Fantasy thrown in. 

Your limits in combat are going to increase as the RP's story unfolds, but an overly-agile swordsman would not be rejected from this RP. 
A swordsman will still have access to [i]some[/i] magicks, but obviously they won't be as adept/comfortable with wielding magic as a Mage. However, I do not want to stifle your creativity so if you can come up with a Character Sheet that portrays the kind of character you want, and I feel that it can jive with the story, I will gladly accept them.
