There was a man named Jesus listed by Roman historian Tacitus referred to Christus and his subsequent execution by Pontius Pilate in his Annals. This reference to Christus has extremely negative comments by Tacitus' on Christianity as a religious movement. Scholars generally consider Tacitus's reference to the execution of Jesus by Pontius Pilate to be both authentic, and of historical value as an independent Roman source. Apparently from Tacitus’ commentary the crucifixion of Jesus was due to his challenging of Roman authority. Whether or not this Jesus is the Son of God, the Prince of Peace and the Savior of the World is debatable. But to claim that Jesus is a fictional character is incorrect.
