How would you feel about me playing as the ship's AI, with a fully robotic avatar similar to 'Romy' from the TV show ?
That is totally fine. Most ships (at least the larger ones with guns on them) will have a Hephaeton on board for logistical support. As another note, a Hephaeton's avatar can be practically anything it wants to appear like such as a floating head, a running stream, or even a animal.
I guess I have questions about the sofistication of the machina and also how inhuman the chimera are (like, if there are hybrids with humans or basically 'is there a range?' )
Machinas are simply your average cyborg. They will retain their atleast some of their organic selves but the rest is obviously cybernetics and nano-artificial muscles. Think of the cyborgs from Ghost in the Shell or Appleseed as an example. For more complex measures, you could imagine a Machina with a built in machine gun in their arm that can deploy when needed. The Chimeras will always have a humanoid form. If there is a range, I would imagine going from looking like a Neko (or whatever you may call them, people with animal ears and tails....And other things I guess XD) to going full Anthro if that helps.
