But having the ability to format posts before posting means I don't have to remember (or my own shorthand) when I'm writing posts in different applications. I agree. Often, when I write posts and have to leave half way through, or want to make a backup of a post, I copied it with the tags into a plain text editor, such as Notepad, because Notepad loads far faster than Word and I only needed plain text. Being able to manually write the tags is useful, and if you want that they need to be intuitive and simple (and reliable), whatever system you choose to go with.

Also, being able to write your formatting in plain-text without having to rely on an editor means you have a fall-back for older devices which might not run the editor so well or for mobile devices which may not like using the editor buttons. This is not to say the editor be done away with, just that the editor should not be the only practical means of formatting a post.
