But seriously now, the most common pitfall in nation RP I've observed that is to be avoided is treating it too much like a strategy videogame to be won. Like, some other nation RPs I've seen fell into a futile spiral of one-upmanship as people tried to overshadow each other, through army embiggering, grandiose super weapons, and so on. Now granted, rivalry is to be expected, and superweapons can be hella fun, but it sometimes gets taken to ridiculous extremes, at which point it ceases to be fun and instead becomes ludicrously prolonged arguments. 

Second of all, it seems to be generally good practice to consult the players of nations you wish to do things to in OOC or private messages. Say, wanting to biff with them, or discussing super cool espionage schemes, or so on. 

However, I'm fairly new to RP myself. These are just what I've gleaned from lurking other nation threads.
