I'm a bit iffy about the Equip Metal spell, since Magic Classes don't really use weapons, but what if rather than directly equipping it, he was just able to control it to attack similar to how 71342's character uses the sword that is also his "channel" for his spells?

By using it after the Manipulate Metal spell, you could do things like making metal saws and then throwing them through the air like death frisbees, or making a few spears and then launching them.
