The truth was most of the time Ash didn't even bother to come for air, she never seemed to need to and didn't quite understand why people got weirded out by that. So she had, at a young age, started coming for air when it seemed like the right amount of time. After a while no one asked questions. She was pretty certain that's why she was so fast in the water, no need to come up for air, so she didn't waste time.
