It wasn't until Johnny's father was laid off at a LexCorp factory that the family truly experienced poverty. Without their primary source of income the Kenwoods were unable to keep their house and had to move from shelter to shelter. Once Johnny came of age he began to fall in with the wrong crowd, in order to feed his family he had to resort to breaking and entering, refusing to steal from his fellow 'Proletariat' Johnny exclusively robbed industrial complexes often taking wiring or machinery. However when word came of a robbery in a Lexcorp factory Johnny immediately wanted in. Everything was going to plan until the police arrived, from here ensued a four hour shoot out, during the battle Johnny fell back into the generator room of the factory attempting to escape through the maintenance hatches, however a stray bullet collided with the generator's experimental core which exploded devastating the factory and bathing Johnny in radiation. Five days later Johnny awoke under a pile of rubble and with his new abilities, returning to the shelter he found no sign of his family, now wayward and suspecting Lex Luthor's involvement, Johnny seeks a purpose and a way to strike out against 'the man'.
