Whats the point of going to Whiterun? It's in the opposite direction? You'll never make it in a day either. That's, at the very least a 4-5 day journey.

To begin with, my characters have no clue about the dragon burial mound which is about to be visited by Alduin(the one in Kynesgrove). Second, they don't even know where Dovahfeyn are at the moment, so having Thorin, Lugdush and Scatha going to Kynesgrove based on nothing they know would be meta-gaming. Thorin is only proposing what he thinks is possible. Not even Scatha knows very much about the burial mounds, despite being an alchemist. When all three leave Whiterun, they may head east first, assuming that it's more likely to find the dragon slayers there.
