Feature request: Welcome to RPG informative PM for new members

Essentially what it says on the tin. An automatically generated, educational PM with either a) a short but thorough explanation of how roleplaying works on RPG or b) links to various guides already written (but subsequently officially approved) by our members. This would help to eliminate confusion among new members. I personally think the subforums and their descriptions are self-explanatory, but we frequently see new members posting threads asking questions, or worse, making mistakes and not posting in accordance with established etiquette. I'd even be willing to write or compile the PM myself, or perhaps it's a good project to keep our moderators busy.

I agree! I would love to see something like this implemented here. I've noticed that not every new person is looking in the News section to find the New User's Guide so doing something like this would be great.

Exactly. It would help steer new members in the right direction straight away, and reduce clutter and confusion.

Yeah, good idea. The guild used to greet guests with a quick-start guide on the homepage. I also like the idea of an introductory PM to provide some sort of reference for newcomers.

Yeah, I remember that. It's not very high on the priority list (I don't think the Guild is experiencing its peak in new member signups right now, but correct me if I'm wrong). The New User's Guide that HeySeuss stickied in the News Section is a fine replacement for the old Quick Start Guide, I reckon. Do you have the (for lack of a better word) infrastructure in place to send automated private messages to new members right now?

Yeah, I could just programmatically create a new convo in the same step I create a new user. I could use the Guild Mods account to be the sender of the PM. Staff could login to it periodically to see if any newcomers responded to that PM with questions or anything.

Not a thing with your draft, looks great not too much info with some helpful links. We do need to neaten up the Fundamental rules and make it a stickied thread from Mahz or the Guild Mods account rather than a quote within a post.

Also added some UI to the moderator forum to express which user the "staff representative" is set to: I'd like to make a "Log in as" button on that account for staff members so we can easily respond to users that PM that account.

With the introduction of user biographies, I would like to see the following included in the introductory PM to encourage their use (because, right now, there's nothing informing new users that the bio exists until they visit their profile).

I'll probably zip through the new user guide and update the BBCode a bit to reflect all the options we have now. I want to also give the thing a close reading to make sure links still work and typos get caught. ;) Edit: Done.
