So the thought came across today. Has anyone had a role play that has somehow evolved naturally into something completely different? Eg: a fantasy that begins to gain elements of a sci-fi, or a school rp that has had to change into life after school. What sparked this thought was while I was looking at the new Mad Max trailer and how the first movie compared to the second, third, and the new one coming out all have a slightly different themes/genres. Yes, they're all somewhat apocalyptic but you can visually say that the first one is very much different to the latest. Just curious if anything has happened in a similar way.

we've seen mixes of the two in the past (sci-fi/fantasy), not participated in such, though, so can't say how well it works.

Well, the NRP I've run for maybe three years as evolved from basically generic alt-history fiction to science-fiction lite.

A Skype Roleplay that I've had for almost three months now began as an actual joke in another chatbox and was intended to poke fun at stereotypical "anime (or "weaboo" as my fellows put it) school" Roleplays and it entirely fell off course to and evolved into a group of edgy, angsty teenagers being tasked with saving the world over and over again while trying to balance school life. Is it still stereotypical and anime? Oh, absolutely. But so much effort has been put into it, it'd be unfair to say it was still a joke Roleplay of sorts.

My NRP used to be a sci-fi sandbox. There were your classic robots that wanted to wipe out life, that one species that wanted to wipe out technology, and there were railguns and lasers. Now soldiers are sent into combat with weapons that destroy souls, there's a woman who is immune to pain because of magic, an entire species is powered by magitech, there's a steampunk hybrid of France and England, god made the universe out of bordeoom, and ended up starting a rebellion in the mid-21st century USA. With railgun arquebuses because, and I quote, "Why the hell not?". How is this supernatural stuff justified? We took the Standard Theory, shoved it in a blender, added multiple discredited theories, threw every single popular anything ever into that blender, left it on the highest setting overnight, laced it with multiple types of drugs, then served it as a giant blob of mush accompanied by a wine glass filled with Michio Kaku's tears. --- There's also another NRP I was in, which started out as a lightly sci-fi RP. Then cloaking devices became a thing, and they were answered with "MOAR EXPLOSHUNS" in the form of antimatter missiles. After about fifty-seven United Nation's buildings being blown up, WW8 began. One of the nations tired to blow up Madagascar with a space antiproton beam, but ended up destroying half of Africa, irradiating the Earth, and releasing an experimental bioweapon in Madagascar. Earth was doomed, but not doomed enough, so a nanovirus was released for the hell of it and everything on Earth died. A hundred years later or so, KEpler 22-B is just one giant planet-sized city, the entire Sirius star system has been turned into a starship, and these two nations decide to go conquer the Sol system because Sirius wants Earth back and the Keplerians want Mars back (Blah blah blah, ancient aliens on Mars, giant war, caused the collapse of the magnetic field, anyways they want it back). By the end, Space Japan had a giant mech for the hell of it and the Keplerians had planet destroying bioships that can also lash out at other warships using giant tentacles of death.

I'm trying to do exactly that. But I told the people joining that they have to be okay with the Slice of Live genre because I want to feel that their characters are super grounded in reality before they get thrown down the rabbit hole. It's an experiment at this point, because I've never done anything like this before. But basically between their roleplaying the GM (me) pulls up scenarios or instances that change the setting. Overtime I plan on it becoming more sci-fi/fantasy like.

I had a group of friends I roleplay'd with on WCIII. When we first started, the roleplay followed the stories of a handful of highschool students gifted with supernatural powers. Eventually, it evolved into an expansive universe filled with gods, alien invasions, demon incursions, an X-COM-esque group of supernatural beings, and hundreds of main characters all living their lives in this master universe. Eventually we had to reboot the world because the main villain died (along with some of the original characters) and took the Titans (from Greek mythology) down with him. We had everything from timeless knights to power armored space travels and angels, demons, vampires, and an entire civilization based on ancient Rome living on Mars. all in a semi-believable universe of total craziness, where pretty much anything that you could imagine, happened. The only reason it worked was because the six of us were pretty loyal friends, who loved to Roleplay and enjoyed each other's company. I'd not sure it would have lasted anywhere near as long if it we had just been a bunch of random strangers.

Doesn't this technically happen given enough time? The setting, characters, and focus will change as people collectively refine, tweak, or change interests in stuff in the game which affects the above
