I am the Lakedaimonians who stood up to those effeminate Persians.  While the others Greeks left (although we told them to do so), we remained (along with our Helot serfs, the Thebans, and the Thespians) here.  Go tell the Lakedaimonians that we lie here dead, serving our city-state.

I am Publius Fabius Maximus Verrucosus.  I stood up to Hannibal and prevented him from assaulting Rome.  While the plebs and patricians alike did not like my delay strategy, it indeed prevented our Roman sons and daughters from having to speak the language of the Carthaginians.

I am Publius Horatius Cocles.  I stood my ground against the Etruscans on the bridge that led to Rome, while my compatriots destroyed the bridge behind me.  With my bravery, I saved Rome.
