I tried that once, and played many RPs with no map references and it got real wonky. Half the time we didn't even know where other people were unless they were next to us. having a detailed map to be able to look at and say "Okay I am here and soon to be dead peeps are there."
(Oops... did I just say that or did Troy... well I can neither confirm nor deny that myself or Troy would ever say that... yup, anyways.)
Having a map is nice for logistics and keeping track of others.
