And survive is just what the people of New Chihuahua have done. These Chihuahuense have been hardened by the harsh lives that they live. They attempt to live a normal life in this abnormal world. Most people live simple lives as farmers, traders, or craftsmen. Education is done at the home as there are no official schools. Trades are passed down from parent to child. Some of the wealthier families can afford to get their children tutors which often leads to government employment.
Government type:
Nuevo Chihuahua is governed by a recently established republic. The main government body is a congress which convenes in Chihuahua. It consists of representatives from each of the main towns. Elections are held every two years. The congress members choose a leader from among themselves who then becomes the president. Congress has authority over the military. There is also a cabinet of advisers who assist the congress. Each town has a mayor who controls the local police and courts.
Spoken language:
Primarily Spanish. Some speak English as well.
Economic System:
There are practically no limitations on the economy short of slavery. Pesos still exist, but they are rarely used by most people other than for long distance trade. Thus, bartering is very common among the people. There are merchants that travel on the highways and trade with surrounding areas.
Imports:
Raw Metals (Iron, Lead, Zinc, Copper, etc.), Coal
Exports:
Lumber, Dairy Products
Food/Water Sources:
Water is obtained from various pond and lakes in the area. These also provide fish. A few crops are grown locally as well as livestock.
Pros:
Due to the danger of the wastelands and crime most people are armed and competent with guns. Also, it would be difficult to attack Nuevo Chihuahua because of the perilous desert that surrounds it.
Cons:
High crime rate due to the weak and corrupt police force. Also, the government is somewhat ineffective due to corruption, lack of resources, and overall incompetence. The military lacks supplies and sufficient training as well.
Mutants/Major hazards in area:
There are pockets of heavy radiation and numerous damaged buildings in parts of Chihuahua. The areas off the road are infested with mutants and deadly animals. Cascabeles(Rattlers): A mutated species of rattlesnakes that have become abnormally large; they are now approximately twice their original size of around 4ft. Their venom is so powerful that it is said that a bite can kill a full grown man in minutes. Coyotes: Many packs of coyotes have become more vicious as a result of mutations. They have a heightened sense of smell and have much stronger jaws. They are known to attack livestock and rarely, traveling traders.
Backstory:
The Reaper and the following nuclear warfare caused the Mexican government to collapse. Those who lived through the disease and warfare existed in a world of chaos. The Nuclear Winter destroyed the norms of society. The sense of brotherhood between men was lost. In this anarchy, it became a world of every-man for themselves. People had to fight others and the world around them to survive. People banded together in the harsh wilderness to survive. Over time, these groups grew into communities which became small villages. They began to trade with each other and a society was formed. At first, each of these towns were independent. However, in 2064 the leaders of towns in the Chihuahua City area met and decided to band together to form a country. Over the last 24 years other villages joined, expanding the territory of Nuevo Chihuahua to the size it is today.
