Considering the abilities are chosen by the characters, it makes just as much sense for them to be varied and unrelated as it does for them to be connected. I know if I was given that choice, my powers would be all over the place.

But yeah, if they were chosen by someone else, it would make more sense for the abilities to be more related to each other.
