Thing is while it might appear that anyone can die during initiation the grounds are closely monitored and controlled. They might have live and dangerous Grimm on the battlefield but they also have a senior staff of well trained hunters ready to step in when things get really bad. Being another world the staff doesn't really have a problem with the students getting extremely roughed up given the state of some people after the exam but they wouldn't actually let anyone die if it could at all be avoided.

Also I have two questions regarding the contest, what is meant by Motif: Paper and when you say the character is the lancer of the team what does that mean in terms of combat?
