What could've happened is that Geni finds out so and so has a passionate hate for the White Fang instead. With that, their interactions could be a little awkward, but maybe they become friends. And bam, the fact that he was a former White Fang drops and you have suddenly a very very personal conflict, much deeper than the little feud here.

You're going to have to bring that up with Loki because everyone was just reacting to that. I do prefer it the way you put it but does that not sound a lot like what happened in RWBY between Blake and Weiss? Granted, they weren't the best of friends but they got along and then Blake dropped the White Fang bomb.

I guess it's over and done with now so we'll see where it goes!
