Perhaps that rule was instated after my service, but I distinctly remember there being a number of regulars who had their own particular principles of war. Not only was the man/woman delineation rarely maintained, but also individuals swapped teams for various purposes.

Herzinth, for example, always fought towards zero. I myself had a more complicated policy of fighting for zero between -99 and +99 and fighting for the winning team beyond those levels. Others even neglected to change the score at all, effectively acting as neutral parties.
