It's not a contradiction because the motives remain hidden to your character [i]until[/i] the traitor explains them.  There has probably been a reason for the traitor for a long time, but your character hasn't known about them or at the very least isn't expecting an attempt of their life, so it's not a deus ex machina either, because it doesn't come from nowhere.
