Information: Io's volcanic activity creates a constantly unstable surface condition for the colonists. However, colonists are able to make a living on Io using hoverdomes and magnetic shield technology (which protects the domes from volcanic ash). It is a capitalist society that bases itself on mining Io's geothermic activity and numerous mineral deposits. 
The Io Protectorate was created in early 2097 by scientists of the Free Trade Federation, which later formed the Jovian Federation. Thus, Io is one of the founding members of the Jovian Federation. Io's economy is very powerful with numerous metal refining and energy extraction activities throughout the planet. In addition, it gets its water from Europa, and hydrogen gas from Jupter itself (for cold fusion).
One of the defining structures on Io is a planetary ring that orbits 20 kilometers around the widest part of the planet, connected to the ground through eighteen space elevators. This massive orbital ring is where all of the starship construction activity occurs, as well as where Io's space defense command is located. Because of the existence of space elevators, transporting material from the planet's surface to space is relatively energy light.
Io's political structure is based on a democratically elected congress but with a hereditary leader much like a constitutional monarchy. This hereditary leader controls vast aspects of Io but has to listen to Io's congress and must obey Jupter's overall commander.
