Even those are described as "few" from what I've read, but yeah you're right. 

Okay, well I can work with that. Small deposits at the two volcanoes, that will at least prop up my economy for a time. The deposits will be big enough to be worth something, but not big enough to be significant when compared to those located in Asia. That way the focus remains on Asia, but gives the European powers a couple of local supplements to their industries.

Any of you fine modern nations want to start the RP with a lease at Vesuvius or Etna? I'll throw in land for a military naval base too, so long as the GM approves of all this, of course.
