Serously. Right in the beginning of the intcheck I state that this game is inspired by "choose you own adventure"-games and Trine. The realism-level of this was never supposed to be near 9000. Also, failure is a big part of the game. Knowingly making bad decisions for your character is a big help there. 

Also, magic wouldn't work. Last time valon used magic on the drake it didn't even merit a reaction. Rule of the game is try something else, so...
