Alaira Taenn (and Tyrael)
Alaira hugged Lyn good and tight as she climbed into the wagon, keeping her close. And when she made the gesture, Alaira was confused... She was familiar with Lyn's gestures, but it took a moment for her to process it. Lyn. Pain. Alaira... That couldn't be right... It was Alaira that almost killed her, not the other way around... Did she... did she think she was responsible? "N-no, you didn't hurt me..." She said, her voice surprisingly gentle as she stroked Lyn's hair. "It was the bad man... he's-" She turned her head, wincing as she saw the man executed. Merely because it was unexpected, it wasn't fair he got such a quick death... he should have experienced searing agony like she had. "He's gone... It wasn't you... I love you, Lyn..." She cooed, trying as best as she could to calm her... She spent the trip in the wagon. The beast pulling the thing complained some at her added weight, But nobody was able to convince her to leave, so they simply dealt with it. She soon fell asleep along with Lyn, and when they reached the place they'd be camping she simply chose to stay in the wagon. She had let Lyn run off, she wanted to help and Alaira had needed some time alone to think...
It had been some time since the demon attacks. Five weeks, a little over a month, since that fateful day. So much had happened that Tyrael felt responsible for. His thoughtless plan to show force with his demons nearly destroyed the college. His time wasted to gather them made him miss out on the birth of Lyn, and the near death of Mar. His complacency made him many mistakes, and he wasn't going to let that happen again. Let the others call him paranoid. He'd rather be ready and wrong than ignorant and unprepared. But first there was a matter of someone else that Tyrael needed to deal with. There were very few people at the college, students anyways, that Tyrael would bother to pay any attention to if they weren't learning from him or done something to get his attention. He only knew a few because of this: Mar, obviously, as he brought her here in the first place. Athalus for being the father of Lyn, though Tyrael hates him for it. Ssarak who Tyrael pins the blame from Athalus on. Colette, who was one of his students. And lastly, Alaira. The rage-born half-elf as Tyrael labeled her as. But from what he had heard, she was perhaps one of the only other students Tyrael would see in a positive light. Granted he also thought she was foolish and bullheaded, but those same two qualities are what brought her to defend Lyn and Mar when that treacherous ocean naga tried to kill them, and she once again offered her life to save them again at the Infirmary. For this Tyrael was thankful, and he was going to go show her his thanks. Of course he'd have to find her first. He didn't ask, so he was just wandering around. Last he heard she sustained some heavy injuries from the fighting, so he figured she would be at the infirmary. ____________________ Alaira had spent the previous month as she did most months, in seething fury. However, the source of her anger was unusual in that she was the target of her own fury. She sighed, gazing down at her hands. She'd try it again... slowly she tried curling the fingers on her left hand into a fist. A simple task, but she shook with effort. Slowly, they obeyed. Good. Now, she tried extending her index finger, and only that, but try as she might she simply as not capable of doing so, her hands were still incapable of fine movement. She could walk, sort of, and speak, but her hands were still beyond her... She leaned forward, placing her face in her hands as she sobbed softly... It was rather fortunate no one else was present in her little corner of the place to hear her. ____________________ Tyrael finally found Alaira in the Infirmary, in a private area off in a corner. Luxurious in a sense, but he doubt anyone wanted to have a room in the Infirmary. Least of all someone like Alaira. A warrior would rather die in battle than in bed. But she wasn't dead, not now and not anytime soon. Tyrael made his presence known with a knock on the nearest solid surface, but entered without invitation. ____________________ She groaned when she heard the knock on the door... It was probably Sam coming back to check on her, or worse, with more medicine... She looked up, and her eyes widened with shock at the sight of Tyrael. In her eyes, it was his goddamn fault all this happened, using demons instead of flesh-and-blood guards. Still, her sudden movement caused her to slide off the bed, and on to the ground. She felt absolutely miserable now, stuck like this. She had fallen off the bed before, and she knew for a fact she wouldn't be able to get back up on her own. She groaned, desperately trying to force herself to a sitting position at least. She'd die before accepting his help... ____________________ Tyrael didn't say anything as he simply picked Alaira up from the ground. She likely hated him, like many did, and would fight him, like many did. She wouldn't succeed, like many didn't, but that didn't stop him from putting her back into bed. Once she was back Tyrael cleared his throat. "...I will be quick. I thank you for your valor in protecting Lyn and Mar that fateful day. Against both that sea naga and... My demons. I know my thanks means nothing to you, but know that I value what you did. Here is a bit of my appreciation." Tyrael put a set of six metal cylindrical objects next to Alaira's bed stand. They were small, just a little bit bigger than one of Alaira's fingers. Others would feel a shock when they touched it, but for an Electromancer like Alaira it was simply a soothing warmth. "Those are batteries. Use them to store your electricity, and unleash them later to save your energy. Use them wisely. Goodbye, Taenn." Tyrael turned to leave without much more fanfare. He could already see some of the more lucid inhabitants eye him. He was unwanted here. ____________________ Alaira squirmed, growling in rage as she was lifted off the ground and placed back on the bed. She didn't even have the energy for yelling. She stared at him in cold fury, never speaking or interrupting him. She didn't think the creature was worth answering. At the very least, he left quickly, leaving the odd 'bat-trees' or whatever the hell onto the small table beside her bed. Gingerly, she picked one up, and lurched forward... there was so much power in this thing... Likely more then she had ever channeled, save... best not to think about that day. She studied it, turning it in her hands...
...Alaira turned the 'Battery' in her hands, stoically wondering if using a gift from someone she hated so much was hypocr- "Actually, no, to the Pit with what others think. All that matters is you and me." "I loved you for a long time Ssarak, and I will continue to for the rest of my life. Now..." Alaira thumped her head against a sack of goods in frustration. Thankfully, it was soft so she didn't make any noise and inadvertently get them yelling at her for eavesdropping... Like she even wanted to hear any of that, gods. How could she focus on her inner monologue with those lovebirds out there?... Though she'd never, ever admit it, even to herself, a small part of her was jealous... They had something she knew she'd never have. She sighed, slipping the battery into her pocket as she climbed out of the wagon. She knew they were keeping watch, and she'd already gotten some sleep. She was near Meirin, and she rapped her Mace on the cart once, in case she hadn't noticed her. "Go take a nap with your boyfriend or something. It's my turn." Despite the harshness of her words, there was a sort of softness in her tone... Perhaps she was sincere, and the blunt statement was the only way she could say. 'Get some rest, I'll take care of this for you.' still, Meirin would't be blamed if she felt insulted.
