I'm going to sound like a nerd for saying this but according to "Japanology", most japanese that lived inland were vegetarians up until the western introduced them to eating meat! It might have been slightly religious, most were buddhists, but mostly they just didn't know how to rear animals in farms and meat was rare (not to mention, expensive). Just random trivia I thought would be nice to share. 

Also, vegetarian in real life. :>.
