Trainer doesn't care at all about the smaller spiders and the cane is ineffective against his armored body. Trainer was actually almost impossible to kill without a ton of effort if not for that one sword your character has that basically ignores his defense. He was going to be the wave 1 boss, although actually still can be if he dodges you a lot and you team up.
