I didn't think it does, but it could be where Gehrman found out about them, and later discovered their weakness through his own research. I just thought it would be a cool connection and a possible source of further conflict for our characters to have, but if you don't like the idea I won't insist on it. And as [@VitaVitaAR] mentioned, it actually wouldn't be that far-fetched for the church (or sect) to actually encourage Doll Hunters in their work to eradicate the "terrible menace".
