She giggled through a mouthful of chow mein when Taylor offered to beat him up, and Nan, knowing Taylor, kicked her under the table. ”What? Little jerks like that deserve a nice kick in the teeth. Whaddya say, May? Show up on the playground tomorrow and mess him up?” “Yeah! I wanna mess him up!” ”See, Nan, she’s into it.” Nan rolled her eyes and dumped her empty plate in the trash. “When you’re done eating, Taylor, you gotta go pick something up for me.” She darted her gaze down to May, who resumed chewing on her food, now quiet. She never talked much when Nan mentioned business, like she understood somehow. “Corner of 5th and King, you know him, green jacket.” She pat down her back pockets and pulled out her wallet, unfolding two hundred-dollar bills. “Keep the change.” She set the bills on the table and began to toss the empty leftover boxes in the trash, wiping down the floor where May dropped a few noodles and pepperoni slices. ”Yo, this isn’t the same guy who got all creepy, yeah? ‘Cause I was about to break his legs last time I had to buy offa him.” “Chill, princess, I dropped him a while back for overcharging. Pretty sure he got taken care of after that by some Supe, forgot who. One of those broody anti-hero types with the whole gun thing.” ”Man! That sucks, I would’ve totally bent that greedy little goblin’s spine like a pipe. Hey, did I mention the bitch shooting at me at the bank earlier? Coulda been a Supe, the way they kept pegging me every second. Hit me in the fu—freaking eye!” “Yeah, you complained about that when you tossed your broken goggles down on the table an hour ago. I’m not your seamstress, you know.” ”Don’t tell me you weren’t jumping on me wearing a little costume you designed and made yourself.” Taylor rolled her eyes and tossed her plate out, stretching and grabbing her hoodie off the back of Nan’s sofa. ”Alright, I’m gonna head out. Want me to drop off your stuff at the usual place?” “Yep. And be polite, I like this guy.” ”Whatever, whatever, don’t scare the shit outta him, yeah.” Taylor scooped the money off the table and tussled May’s hair, eliciting a giggle and a few playfully annoyed swats. She pressed a quick kiss to the top of the little girl’s head before she headed to the door, shrugging into her jacket. ”I’ll drop by here again, so save me some dessert, yeah?” “Gotcha. Get going, I don’t wanna have May waiting for you to get back all night.”
