This is a story of magical elements in a real world. A story of mystics, madmen, oracles, monsters, and Wizards; of racism and slavery, politics and war, corruption and creation, faith and logic. This story begins with the terrifying events of mythic legend, a town scorched black by the fires of a dragon. But it is set in the real world, it is surrounded by real events, and real people, and real-istic heroes. It begins in the town of Sintra, overlooked by the beautiful Sintra Mountains in Portugal, circa 1666. You are a person currently living in this small, partly coastal city on the day after the horrific events took place. From barmaid to banker, and explorer to saint, all who survived did so by seeking refuge in the mostly intact castle or barely intact monastery.

Those in power, who can culminate, fabricate, and discard with history in the most lethal of whims, seek a way to rid the world of the Dragon, and plunder any treasure that may accompany the beast into his dreams. It is to the courts dismay that on the docket to be killed the very next day is a man purporting to be the “Dread Captain Scar”, a mythical pirate and monster-killer. They free him, ask that he form a team of Monster Hunters, and with the blessings of the church, go into Morocco, where the Dragon’s lair is said to be, and end the creatures ungodly life. You are among the potential hunters. You may be strong or weak, smart or dull, Christian or Muslim or Pagan or Heathen; a rogue, an explorer, a monk, a historian, a scholar, or a prostitute. Whatever your skill set or affiliation, you will be chosen to attend this journey, chosen to undertake this most righteous of paths... this is righteous, isn’t it?

What the unwary voyagers of this expedition don’t know, and what they could never know, is that they are about to enter a world of fantasy. A world only ever spoken of in fairytales. The world that they knew to exist will have its ramparts blasted open, and the light of the truth may blind whoever dares step through the crumbled wreckage of the lies which kept them hostage there.

So I'm assuming we won't be able to tote around cannons on our arm?

Either way, I'm pretty interested. I've seen this idea before but have never gotten around to or been able to hop on for the ride. When you say world of fantasy, is it limited to goblins and fairies, or can there be more interesting cryptids running about the lands? Also, how limited will be firearms in this? Muskets and blunderbuss started to gain traction during the 1600s, so can we expect to use some?

...seriously though, arm cannons?

...please?

Bloodborne is sweeeeet!

@SirBeowulf As for the questions concerning the world. When imagining any element of this world, you must simply take one thing into account: there is no heavy evidence that any of these fantastical things ever existed. Each magical element, by necessity, is hidden from the normal world. This doesn't mean the worlds do not intertwine, however. There may be faries, and they may use invisibility spells in order to roam through markets--or perhaps they transform. Goblins may be smaller than in ordinary fantasy settings, having underground fights with Gnomes. I expect the fiction of this to unravel as we go, but that's the overall vibe I'm going for. If that's not clear, please feel free to ask questions.

As for firearms, expect to see blunderbuss' and muskets, early carbines, and perhaps early mechanized pistols. A hand cannon could, potentially, be arranged.

I'm glad we were able to catch your attention this time!

Other than early firearms, what can we expect for weaponry?

Swords, spears, standard par for the course? I expect spears/halberds to be a favorite pick for infantry. Cuirasses and scimitars and what not for flavor.

On the topic of characters, would hired crew muscle on board a trading ship be a good basis for a reason to be in Portugal? Wes should adapt to the setting pretty well. I plan on having him be left behind for something, thus sparking his reasons to go on a quest.

All of that sounds good to me.

I'm interested. Would I be able to play a chemist/alchemist of sorts? Specializing in healing or weaponized chemicals, and then in the fantasy world, that could bloom into something a little more exciting?

That seems altogether possible. We can work on the idea during your cs creation process.

This reminds me of a fusion between Bloodborne and the Monster Hunter franchise, and so of course, I'm interested, because I am so very predictable.

Would some sort of wandering thief work? I'd wager the possibility of a reward would be more than enough incentive to embark on a quest, and the whole "amorality" issue might spark some tension. Plus, I've always wanted to play a truly selfish character.

I'm interested in this, mostly because I thirst for Bloodborne but have no PS4 and this seems like it might ease the pain.

Will have to think about my character.

Honestly, the Blood Borne comparison might be a mistake. The story will have some of those gothic themes throughout it, but I see it as being a little more global. There's some Arabian Nights inspiration in the plot as well as some pirate noir elements. I hope that isn't disappointing for anyone.

I'm not quite sure how to explain the vibe I'm getting, but Bloodborne was somehow the closest comparison. That, or I'm simply too thirsty for my own good.

But, hey, Arabian Nights having a glorious child with pirate noir is certainly no disappointment! This role play sounds like it'll be entertaining.

Alright, color me interested. I'm going to be a little slow out the gate because it's testing season here and I'm already struggling to keep up, but I can promise to have time to do serious writing on the weekends at the very least.

Would a traveler/monk/wayward martial-artist from the east be able to make an appearance? I'm torn between a silent martial artist or an eastern-y playboy skilled in the art of seducing women and the Kama Sutra... And fighting dirty.

I'm sure whatever you come up with will be delightful. Or not. Either way, I can't wait to see it.

Nice interest. I'll devise an OOC for this over the next couple of days.

Very nice. Aside from maybe some more description in the apperance, I don't really have any crtiques. And that's just so that people can get a good idea without having to look at the picture.

I'm interested as well! I'll get a CS up either tonight or tomorrow by the latest, I like the time era, and I'm interested in trying something new.

Thinking of a pagan woman archetype, possibly escaping for claims as being a witch in the inquisition, or maybe a Roma woman who is a bard. Much to be thought out.
