I think we are overlooking the fact too that you are using a weapon type that literally no heroic spirit has dealt with in their life. Yes they know what a gun is, but how do you fight effectively against something you have never encountered before. You can fudge fighting a spear or axe with past knowledge, but bows and guns are far too different.
