Welcome to Skyline Institute, a boarding school that is said to fulfill dreams. At the very least, upon graduation the student would be free to choose whatever job or occupation they wished. However, just as things rarely are what they appear to be, Skyline is not your average high school. Any prospective students must be able to see the floating island in the sky in order to be enrolled. And within the school year, students must undergo many trials called ‘eclipses’ or ‘blights’. Many die, and it is not unheard of for no one to survive until the end. The students must try their best to persevere using their word power, a single word that each person chooses to rely on. (Note: This is an Aphorism RP, but some things have been changed. Everyone is free to join, and reading through the entire manga isn’t necessary. It may help with understanding the RP more though.)
School:

The school is set in Springfield, Illnois and mimics Japan’s Naraka High School. Unlike Naraka, Skyline also accepts international students. The only requirement for getting accepted into the school is being able to see the floating island. Graduating from the school allows the student to pursue any job or career they want afterwards. The school and graduates are supported by the government, who is fully aware of what goes on. The school is only for one year, and students are split into eight classes of 25-30 people each. School colors are sky blue and white. Standing at the front gate of Skyline, the school appears to be very far away. However, once a person walks through it, they are transported to another dimension containing the school. Students cannot leave due to a barrier that surrounds it, nor can the barrier be affected by word powers. The outside of buildings are indestructible and the inner walls regenerate after being destroyed. On weekdays, students normally go to homeroom at 9:00 am, and then are free to attend to any lesson they so desire. Each day, teachers will teach the same subject every hour until 3:00 pm. So other students who go to class for another subject can still take the lesson they missed. Students are allowed to request other subjects that aren’t provided by the school. The school doesn't force their students to take any lessons since the only requirement for graduation is surviving until the end of the year. Three meals are served each day, students can choose whether or not to go to all of them. But the food is high quality, a small reward for surviving each day. There is an infirmary for people who are injured during blights. The staff there can help with normal injuries, but can’t regrow an arm or the like. Dorms are separated into male and female. Each dorm room will be shared by two students. The headmaster of the school enjoys watching the students struggle against the eclipses (and in general). It is rumored that the headmaster controls the blights, but he is protected by four powerful guards. Guards also double as enforcement of the school. While there isn’t a rule against killing other students, anyone that starts a massacre will be killed by the guards. The headmaster also has the ability to use all words. There is no way to leave the school aside from graduating.

Transfer Students:
(Important if you are joining in the middle of the RP)
Transfer students would go through the following steps: 1) Getting accepted into Skyline Institute after they applied. Remember that one of the requirements into getting in is being able to see the floating island into the sky. Also note that most people do not know of the true nature of the school. Only those that have done very thorough, extensive research (a simple google search would not tell you) or know people that have graduated have a possibility of knowing. 2) Handing off luggage to security before entering through the school gates. Once in school, a guard will escort you to your teacher's office. (When I accept applications, they will include a class assignment that will be decided using a random number generator unless there is a lack of students in a particular class.) 3) In the teacher's office, the teacher will hand your character a piece of paper and ask them the question in a certain way (see the RP for their personalities and wordings) depending on the teacher. 4)Your character will then write down a word and be instructed to say the word out loud. 5) Once your character does, he or she will feel a burning or itching sensation for where the word appeared. That signifies the word ritual is complete. The teacher will then hand your character an envelope with their class assignment written on it, along with room information and key. 6) Have fun! Important: Transfer students may only join the school in between blights. They may not transfer if a blight is currently going on. When they are finished, the teacher checks all of them to make sure they are all one word each and appropriate. Then, the students are told to say the word they’ve written down out loud. Upon doing so, the paper disintegrates and the word appears somewhere on the body. Words take the form of either a word picture

or in a fancy font. The word grants you certain powers related to it and marks you as a fighter during blights. If the student destroys the mark, the word will appear elsewhere on the body. It cannot be erased until you graduate. If you wrote the word ‘sword’ then you will be able to create a sword based on your imagination, if you put ‘fire’ then you can manipulate fire. However, words are limited by their meaning, so if you have ‘sword’ and imagine a sword covered in fire, it wouldn’t work since ‘sword’ has nothing to do with fire. Words can be used in different ways depending on all of its definitions. For example with the word ‘light’, a character could manipulate light or make him/herself lighter. For consistency’s sake, the definitions used will be from http://dictionary.reference.com/. Archaic and slang definitions are also allowed. When using a word, one must understand its true meaning and have a clear picture of what they want it to do. Otherwise, it’ll backfire on the user. When a word backfires, it will either fail or harm the user with the word. Example: If ‘strength’ fails, the user will become weak. Utilizing a word naturally drains mental stamina, depending on the amount of concentration it takes to use it. When manifesting a word, it must abide by the most common societal instances that the word’s language originates from. For example, ‘sword’ can only create a sword of some form of metal, foam, or plastic (and other typical materials). Society does not typically see swords made out of anti-matter, fire, lightning, or plasma. So words materialize at their normal temperatures (most likely room temperature) and he/she can control its movement afterwards. So ice cream would be created at a temperature below freezing and living creatures manifested would be at their normal body temperature. As for fictional constructs, it will function as intended but not gain any special abilities unrelated to the word. For fictional living creatures, the word will take liberties with the biology (such as a dragon with two hearts and one lung) but it will still be able move and live normally. Creatures that have a basis in reality will be created with normal biology. When the creator or summoner dies, all of his/her constructs disappear as well. In addition, characters cannot create an object or living being when the space is already being occupied. Example: If 'sword' tried to manifest a sword in someone's body, it would fail. Word usage range is typically the radius of the person’s sight. When a person uses their power outside of that range, it has a higher chance of backfiring because of the imagination required. Usage is also limited by knowledge, because one cannot imagine something he/she doesn’t know of. Example: ‘Strength’ cannot strengthen something in another room over if the user does not know the thing exists. There will be hard range limits on characters with powerful abilities (or instant effect abilities) such as, ‘kill’, ‘disappear’, etc.

Eclipse/Blight:
An eclipse happens when the floating island blocks the sun from the school. Eclipses happen randomly, excluding nighttime and cloudy/rainy weather. Words that create weather will stop eclipses inconsistently. When there isn’t an eclipse, students have classes like a normal high school student. Blights typically occur 2-3 times a week. A blight may last several days if not dealt with, and will sometimes grow stronger. There are four different types: fixed, normal, isolation, and special. Fixed blights - only happen on certain days Normal blights - can happen whenever it isn't raining Isolation blights - only happen when the number of students is divisible by three. The students will then be transported into a separate realm in groups of three. They must pass a test set by the guardian of the realm together in order to exit. If they don’t finish within the time limit, they will disappear with the realm. Special blights - happens randomly and continues until either all the students have died or it is cleared. They do not get cancelled by rain in most cases. Eclipse Monsters: Enemies that spawn from the eclipse will only attack those with a word. The enemies will have different forms depending on the seal they're governed by.
Rules:
1) Be respectful 2) Listen to admin and mods 3) No godmodding, metagaming, or powerplaying 4) No Mary Sues (one dimensional, perfect, idealized characters) 5) Use correct grammar 6) RP in past or present tense 7) Avoid spelling mistakes. Unless you actually have dyslexia (In which case, send me a pm about it). 8) Avoid one liners if at all possible 9) Don’t double post 10) Keep any romance PG-13 11) Have fun (optional, but recommended)
FAQ:

Q: “What happens if I write more than one word?” A: The ritual will fail and your character will probably be eaten by monsters. Q: “What if I write a word like ‘the’?” A: If your character somehow bypasses the teacher’s check and completes the ritual with that word, then congratulations. You now have a useless word. Q: “What if I write something like ‘God’?” A: Pronouns don’t work and the ritual will fail. Have fun getting killed in the first blight. Q: “Can I make multiple characters?” A: Feel free. Just make sure you actually use them. Q: “What if I write on two slips of paper?” A: Whatever word you speak first will be the one your character is marked with. Unless you have two mouths or something. Q: “Well, what if it’s the same word on two slips of paper?” A: Only one of them is used. The other just sits there as a normal piece of paper. Q: “Can my character have multiple words if s/he has multiple personality disorder or bipolar disorder?” A: No. First, the proper name of multiple personality disorder is dissociative identity disorder (DID). Second, although people suffering from DID have multiple personalities (called alters), it is still all one mind and one body. The only way DID would affect the word power is if an alter is more creative, more imaginative, more aggressive, etc. In the case of bipolar disorder, that’s a mood disorder characterized by periods of mania and depression. There’s no reason why the person would get more than one word because of that. Q: “Is there mana?” A: No. Q: “Can I use a word from a different language?” A: No. Stick with English only. Q: “What's stopping people from writing super broad words like object, structure, weapon, or energy?” A: Using some of the super broad words are fine, depending on what they can do. Me and the moderator(s) will also be checking the applications to make sure no one word is too insane. We will either suggest restrictions to the word or ban it entirely if it's too much. Q: "Will you reject an application solely because of its grammatical errors?" A: Nope. I reject based on whether or not they meet the necessary requirements and if they simply make logical sense. That being said, I will reject an app if the grammar is horrendous enough. And if an app is rejected, I may ask you to polish the writing a bit more as well. Q: Do you have room for more people? A: There is always room for more people. :) There are mechanisms in place for people to join at any time (transfer students). Depending on how far in the year we are by the time you join, your character may have to stay another year at Skyline in order to graduate.
