[@TheUnknowable] Either someone deliberately set-up the systems in such a way as to act as a booby trap, or one of the maintenance droids went berserk and rewired the entire ship, cross connecting all the systems.

The latter option might explain why half of the corridors were painted gunmetal grey while the others were ocean gray. :D
