All I want is a hint of the category of science. For example, the Codex control things by sending waves that cause particles to move in different patterns, and these waves are generated and manipulated in the brains of the Codex. But I don't agree that it's no fun to base things on realism; I do it myself, and it just takes creativity and some out of the box thought. It's awkward to respond to an observation like that.
I did think of an explanation, but I meant the fact that everything has to have a root from a realistic concept. It's somewhat limiting in my eyes. I get a lot of joy from looking at a piece of technology seen in a movie or described in a novel and wondering how it works, but never needing to now how. The energy gets trapped in the crystal's unique lattice, which is formed from the anomaly nonmetal Calzite, an anomaly element that is the opposite of technetium in that it is stable when it should be too large to be, and Aluminum. The nuclear charge is so large, as the element has an incredibly large atomic number, that the size of the atom is very small in comparison to other atoms. The minimal space in between the ions in the lattice makes for an an excellent way to trap the energy within the lattice of the crystals once it has passed been absorbed by the crystal. The shape of the network is what allows it to enter but not leave.
