For the most part, he's just an ass and doesn't care very much about family affairs, and he has the inner fear that his son may try to take over someday. The less emotion he feels for his son, the more secure he feels, because it would be all the easier in his mind to call him a rebel than if he was on good terms with his son, and his son did what the King had done to his own father, and his father to the one before him.
